It Started as a PC Game

When we first built 2 Player Snake, it was designed entirely with PC in mind. Two players, one keyboard, same screen. Player 1 uses WASD, Player 2 uses the arrow keys. Simple, clean, and it worked exactly as intended.

We were happy with it. The game felt competitive and fun. We published it, shared it with a few people, and started getting feedback.

Then someone asked: “Does it work on mobile?”

The Mobile Problem

We opened the game on a phone and immediately saw the issue. The keyboard-based controls obviously didn’t work on a touchscreen. The game loaded — but it was unplayable.

Our first instinct was to just redirect mobile users away with a message: “This game requires a keyboard. Please play on a PC.” And for a while, that’s what we did.

But the more we thought about it, the more it bothered us. So much snake gaming happens on phones. Two friends on a couch, passing a phone back and forth — that’s actually a great use case. We were leaving it on the table.

Designing Touch Controls

The core challenge was: how do you fit two players on one phone screen with touch controls that actually work?

We went back to our AI models and started iterating. The solution we landed on was a split-screen touch interface: each player gets their own half of the screen, with swipe gestures to control direction. It sounds simple — but getting it to feel responsive and fair for both players took a lot of trial and error.

We tested it on different phone sizes, different hand positions, different swipe speeds. Every issue we found, we described to the AI and got a fix. The mobile version went through far more iterations than the PC version ever did.

A Separate Game, Same Spirit

The mobile version ended up being a genuinely different experience from the PC version — not just a port. The swipe controls change the feel of the game. Movements are a little more deliberate, the pace slightly different. Some people actually prefer it.

We kept both versions live as separate pages — PC at the main site, mobile at its own URL. The automatic redirect we built detects your device and sends you to the right version.

What started as an afterthought became one of the things we’re most proud of. The mobile version opened up a whole new way to play — and reminded us that sometimes the best features come from questions you didn’t expect.
